MAUI'S TOMMY MUSTO HEADS TO SPAIN
Poʻokela SC player, Tommy Musto, was officially named as one of the nation’s elite, as US Club Soccer announced its 2016 id² National Selection International Tour roster via YouTube on Thursday. Musto’s talent was first recognized on Maui—at the VIYSL hosted US Club Soccer Player Development Program—where Musto impressed id² Director and NSIT Head Coach, Gerry McKeown. Musto was called up by McKeown to attend the next-level id² Training Camp in December, where Musto earned his spot on the national 18-man roster.
The 12-day international tour will include competition against top LaLiga academy teams at some of Spain’s best facilities—the training grounds where a vast majority of the world’s greatest players developed through the ranks. Musto calls this experience, “unreal” and the “craziest days of my soccer life”, as he prepares to take on the infantile teams of Valencia, Villarreal, Espanyol, and Barcelona from February 20 to March 2.
U.S. Soccer Federation Technical Advisor, Todd Saldaña, will join the NSIT Team in Spain, to scout players for potential youth national team inclusion.
According to Hawaii Soccer Federation President and VIYSL Director, Vernon Kapuaʻala, “this Olympic Committee sanctioned program transgresses club affiliation and socioeconomic status—consistent with US Club Soccer’s core philosophy that top talent identification and development should be free to players.” Musto’s father and coach, Carl, calls the extensive id²/PDP scouting process “extremely high-level” and “first class”. Tommy claims that “US Club Soccer treats me like a professional”.
