Wailuku, Maui – After participating in MISO Junior League’s (MJL) Elite U12 boys team tryouts in January, Maui’s Kayden Medeiros was selected for the 16-man roster—to travel to Japan this summer. The O‘ahu based tryouts were open to top players who participate in MJL, as well as through favorable mentions by distinctive neighbor island directors and coaches.
When asked of Medeiros’ attributes, Valley Isle Youth Select League (VIYSL) Director, Vernon Kapua‘ala, stated, "Kayden won't be the fastest player on the pitch, but he will put the ball in the net...the hardest thing to do in soccer."
The final stages of the tryouts included friendly matches against the Kashima Antlers of Japan. True to form, Medeiros scored three goals in two games, while assisting on a fourth goal versus the J-league club’s U12 academy team.
In July 2016, the MJL Elite squad—made up of top players born in 2004—will head to Japan to complete against J-League academy teams, as well as other prominent youth clubs. Past tour teams have participated in the Saitama International Junior Football Tournament during the 10-day tour.
This year’s group will be under the direction of ‘Iolani graduate and former HSC Bulls player, Duke Hashimoto. Hashimoto—who currently coaches with Abunai Soccer Academy—played collegiate soccer at Southern Methodist University, and spent time in the MLS reserve ranks and the USL first division.
